: many-tentacled sea-monsters from the 1870 The Illustrated Police News, the Victorian sensational tabloid of the grotesque, bizarre and just plain nasty.
Courtesy of the cheerful little volume 'Orrible Murder by Leonard de Vries, a collection of articles and illustrations from TIPN- basically, the weirdest/goriest crimes and events. (This was my bedtime reading when I was 5; I thought the melodrama of the engravings was hilarious. Unkind people would say that explains a lot.)
So here we are. Authentic 19th-century squid/octopi.
